A COLLABORATIVE MASTERPIECE

The Genesis of the 1628 Nicola Amati Copy

A violin crafted by eleven renowned luthiers? It sounds like a dream, but it's a reality! The Forum des Fabricants brought together a team of incredibly talented luthiers to create a stunning copy of a 1628 Nicola Amati violin.

This ambitious project saw the likes of Fabienne Gauchet, Gay Harrison, Lucas Castera, and more join forces, each lending their expertise to the creation of this instrument.

The result? A beautiful violin that not only pays homage to the legendary Amati but also embraces sustainability. Vermont Violins generously donated ebony alternative fittings, highlighting the commitment to environmentally conscious practices in lutherie.

But it gets even better! Edwin Huizinga graced the 2024 Sweetwater Music Festival with a performance on this very instrument, showcasing its exquisite sound and craftsmanship.

The Amati copy has garnered significant interest, with the Forum des Fabricants currently in negotiations with potential buyers. This collaborative masterpiece is a testament to the power of shared passion and dedication to the art of violin making.

A special thanks to all the participating luthiers for their invaluable contributions to this project!

Ebony alternatives are rising in prominence due to growing concerns about the sustainability of traditional ebony. Materials like Sonowood, made from compressed sustainable wood species, and GaiaTone, crafted from recycled paper and bio-resins, offer durable and aesthetically pleasing options for violin fittings. These alternatives not only help protect endangered ebony trees but also provide luthiers with consistent, high-quality materials that are less prone to cracking and warping than traditional ebony. The use of ebony alternatives reflects a growing commitment to environmental responsibility within the violin-making community.
